Palazzo Pitti
12 “ x 24” Oil, Craypas, Linen and Plaster on Masonite
Created in 2024 and informed by the green room in the Palazzo Pitti. Though the walls in the palazzo are damask silk, this piece reimagines the green room as pure fresco. The composition draws the eye inward through the ragged, frayed borders that enclose the central expanse. The materiality of the linen is weathered and organic, implying notions of age and decay. Within the interior space, the greenish-yellow hues create a radiant, glowing effect reminiscent of sunlight filtering through a dense atmospheric haze or fog. The textural brushwork and scratchy markings prevent the surface from becoming too flat or monotonous. Subtle shifts in tone suggest history emerging, as if the tempera of Renaissance fresco were coming to life. Bold straight swaths of red pigment introduce a grounding linear element amid the more amorphous, atmospheric space, providing a strong chromatic counterpoint that energizes the overall palette. The piece is elemental - earth, air, fire - unified into an immersive, primordial environment expressed through expert handling of color, texture and composition. It's an intriguing artistic surface that rewards studied contemplation of its many nuanced details.
